Question by mystylazuli: If I use non suitable drinking water from a well in my humidifiers are the organisms then airborne?
We have a large well for bathing and washing but cannot drink from it. I use this water in my indoor humidifiers. Are the contaminants cabable of becoming airborne and making my family sick? I can’t afford to use the filtered water we buy to drink and cook with. I use the humidifiers for my plants. They just thrive, but I am noticing my family is getting colds and stool problems. Is this from the well water I am using in the humidifiers? Can I boil the water b4 putting in the humidifiers?
Wow!! Thanks. As for the expense for boiling water, we have our own natural gas well also, so we pay for no natural gas or propane to heat our house, water, and cook with. So I think I’ll just boil a ton of it for the humidifiers. I do not have the complete analysis. It was done 8 or more years ago. How often should wells be tested?

What is the contamination in the well? If there are microorganisms, there is some risk that they may be harmful. If the contamination is mainly nitrates or metals, use in humidifiers won’t be much of a problem. Do you have an analysis report for the water?
If you are using impure water for washing, there is always a small risk for contamination even after drying up hands, cutlery etc. Contamination usually manifests as stool problems, common cold usually has other reasons (but a weakened resistance due to other contamination being warded off might be one).
If the humidifiers work by slow evaporation, the risk is fairly low. Legionella are dangerous, but are mostly transferred by droplets, e.g. in showers or in spray humidifiers. For spray humidifiers, some disinfection is advisable.
Boiling the water ought to do the job, but may be as expensive as using the filtered water. Ultraviolet disinfection would reduce the risk strongly, too.
